Calculate Your Networking ROI

By Kim Villa
Inkandescent Networking

Several years ago, I was working hard to grow my firm, Tall Girl Promotions, and to get the word out signed up to one networking event almost every day of the week.

In an attempt to get even more involved in the group, I volunteered to chair committees, and even help organize some events.

After a few months, not only was I exhausted — I began to question my strategy.

I was spending a lot of time away from doing my business, so I needed to be sure I was getting a good return on my investment.

I came up with a simple equation, which also took into consideration some hard-to-measure benefits such as making new friends, learning something new from a speaker, being inspired, and even being entertained.

Here is my formula:
+ Annual membership dues = $400
+ 12 events per year at $40 each = $480
+ 2 hours at each event
+ 1 hour of follow up at $50 per hour of my time = $1800
= Total Annual Investment: $2680

If I make a 20 percent commission on the products my clients buy, then I’d need to sell $13,400 of goods or services each year to the members of this group to break even.

Seeing the numbers outlined so clearly was a real eye-opener. I dropped down to participating regularly in four groups. When I stopped spreading myself so thin, I not only saved time and money—I was able to make my involvement in those groups a deeper, richer, and more fulfilling experience.

Are you getting a good return on your investment? If not, we may be able to help. Send questions, thoughts, and ideas to us at hope@inkandescentpr.com.

Happy Networking!
