Don't Miss the Hottest Networking Events in DC this March

Networking can be one of the most exciting opportunities business owners can have to grow their company. Not only do you meet people you wouldn’t necessarily come across in your daily travels, you will often find yourself in a party-like environment where you can relax, and learn something new.

That’s why I am excited to partner with Inkandescent Networking, a new service being offered by Inkandescent Public Relations. I know as well as anyone that networking for maximum effectiveness is a science and an art. So I couldn’t think of a better way to help others network well with a monthly list of networking events to choose from (see the list below).

Of course, knowing how to network well takes a little savvy. In the 15 years I’ve been attending these kinds of events, I’ve picked up a few tricks of the trade, which are listed here. In the coming months, you’ll find other tips from other networking experts, as well as interviews with the folks who host the grand networking affairs. Here’s to your networking success!


Kimberly Villa’s Five Tips for Networking Success

1. Attitude is everything. I have a friend who hands out cards that say, “Is Your Attitude Contagious?” He means, of course, that if you aren’t happy and peppy and bursting with joy, you are going to pull down everyone around you. Sure, you may have just had a bad day at the office, but you need to leave that behind. People are naturally drawn to smiling, friendly, warm, and welcoming people. If you are carrying around the resentments of the day, it will show on your face and in your body language. Force yourself to smile and think about the good things in your life on the way to the event. By the time you get there, you will be beaming with positive energy, and you will have a much better chance drawing the crowd to you.

2. Look the part. Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the event. If you’re not sure what appropriate attire is, call the event organizer. Iron your clothes, brush your hair, freshen your make-up. Good or bad, people will form much of their opinion of you before you even introduce yourself. Naturally, people think if you look put together and professional, you must be. So visit the bathroom before entering the networking room.

3. Be prepared. I don’t know how many times I’ve been to a networking event where someone tells me they forgot their business cards. Really? Just don’t do it. Another good idea is to bring your own name badge. You might not need it, but it’s always good to have one in case the organizers aren’t quite that organized, or they mistakenly left your name off the list. It’s always nice to be able to display your business card in the way you’d like — especially if you own a creative business. Like your clothes, your badge and business card can speak volumes.

4. Really connect with the people you meet. How many times have you come back from an event, looked at a business card that you received, and cannot remember the person? That’s because they probably did not engage you in conversation. Or if they did, it was a conversation that was clearly self-serving. Really try to connect with the people you meet. Ask them questions about who they are, what they do, and why they do it. The more you honestly care about the people you meet, the more luck you will have building worthwhile relationships.

5. Be memorable. Everyone has something they can play up. For me, it’s my height. I purposely wear heels to networking events, making my already tall 6-1 frame an unforgettable 6-3. I also make a little joke about not having to be a “tall girl” to work with us. Often, when I meet people again, they will tell me they might not have remembered my name, but they couldn’t forget the name of my company. I have met singers who sing their introduction, and poets who rhyme theirs. Whether you want to emphasize a physical characteristic, a special talent, or your truly incredible service, find the thing that sets you apart. If you can’t figure out what it is, ask your friends what they think is your most memorable attribute. Then capitalize on it.
